Being roasted is like being seen, it's a form of understanding and perceiving an essence in someone. Even if the essence may be feared, being seen provides a sense of relief. Making fun or impersonating someone can be a way of showing love and affection. Being told a mean thing directly is considered more decent than being stabbed in the back.
