History's Heroes

NOTE

The Holocaust and the Yaris

The prisoners, including Bella Hazan and others, were saved by her mother, Dr. Herman, and other prisoners who were able to walk. They hid the prisoners in the bomb craters in a nearby small forest until darkness and then carried them 8 kilometers to the American occupied area./nBella Hazan was liberated from Nazi captivity by American forces on April 19, 1945. The Allies declared victory in Europe on May 8, 1945./nHazan married Hayim Yari and they decided to move to politically volatile Palestine, which was still under British control. Many Jewish settlers there were traumatized Holocaust survivors./nHolocaust survivors living in the neighborhood were often heard shouting during the day and walking and talking to themselves at night./nThe Yaris initially lived on a socialist Zionist community dedicated to agriculture and communal living, but it brought back nightmares of incarceration as the cabins resembled barracks and the fences reminded them of their past.
