Lithium-ion batteries have been the focus of significant research and development efforts to improve their energy density. Despite ambitious goals, the energy density of lithium-ion batteries is unlikely to match that of fossil fuels. Various approaches such as silicon anodes, solid-state batteries, and sulfur cathodes are being explored to enhance energy density. Incremental advancements in existing chemistries have resulted in substantial progress. Anticipated improvements in lithium-ion battery density for high-performance batteries are projected to reach at least 50% in the next five to ten years.
