Exploring Control Theory for Large Language Models

The concept of control theory originated from Maxwell's observation of engines in the late 1800s, where governors were used to maintain a consistent speed despite varying loads. By formalizing feedback control, systems can be designed to adjust and correct errors over time, making them more robust and predictable. Applying this idea to Large Language Models (LLMs), there is a need to develop a control theory to understand how to control and optimize these complex systems. Currently, LLMs are managed through heuristic prompt engineering, which lacks a principled approach. Establishing a control theory for LLMs aims to provide engineering and fundamental insights that can enhance their reliability, robustness, and enable more principled engineering practices. This approach seeks to delve into the nature of LLM systems to facilitate better control and optimization, akin to how control theory revolutionized engineering in other domains.
