Machine Learning Street Talk (MLST)

NOTE

The Meaning of Computation and Semantics in Snake Mimicry

Philosopher and AI researcher, Mark Bishop, discusses the meaning of computation and how it is observer relative. He gives an example of a chess computer controlling lights in an art exhibition and argues that it is meaningless until put to human use, imbuing it with meaning. However, the philosopher he was speaking with disagrees, citing the example of Bayesian mimicry, where non-poisonous snakes imitate the appearance of poisonous snakes to deter predators. This is seen as a form of deception and therefore semantic in nature.
