Speech Pathways in Humans and Animals

The auditory pathway in humans and certain animals contains complex algorithms for understanding speech, different from a language module. Humans and parrots share a specialized speech production pathway, whereas the auditory perception pathway is more common in the animal kingdom, enabling dogs to comprehend human speech. Dogs can grasp several hundred words, while great apes can learn thousands but cannot verbally communicate. Various animals, like whales, dolphins, and birds, have communication modes akin to language, though not traditionally classified as language.
