New Studies Suggest Outdoor Lighting May Affect Nearsightedness More Than Near Activity

Recent studies indicate that the development of nearsightedness, particularly during preteen and teen years, may have more to do with exposure to different types of lighting rather than just near work activities. Research suggests that spending more time indoors under artificial lighting, which lacks full spectrum light, may contribute to the progression of nearsightedness. Conversely, spending time outdoors, especially in natural sunlight, where there is exposure to full spectrum lighting, appears to be associated with lesser progression of nearsightedness. Randomized controlled trials have shown that children who spend more time outdoors have slower nearsightedness progression compared to those who spend more time indoors. This shift in understanding highlights the importance of outdoor lighting exposure in eye health and suggests that encouraging children to balance their indoor activities with spending time outdoors may be beneficial in managing nearsightedness.
