Why Are Robocalls So Hard to Stop? (Plus: Kamala and the Gender Wars.)

Plain English with Derek Thompson

NOTE

Technology: A Double-Edged Sword

The evolution of telemarketing regulations began in response to widespread annoyance with unsolicited calls in the late 80s and 90s, leading to the establishment of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act in 1991, which mandated consent for robocalls. The creation of the Do Not Call list empowered consumers to limit unwanted contact. However, by the early to mid-2010s, a surge in technology, particularly internet-based calling platforms, significantly lowered the cost and ease of making calls, exacerbating the problem of unwanted telemarketing and robocalls. This development illustrates the dual nature of technology as both a facilitator of convenience and a means of creating new challenges and inconveniences.
