Sometimes we feel a sense of pleasure or relief when something bad happens to someone we love, even though we also feel genuine grief. This experience, known as schadenfreude, is often suffused with shame. Envy, on the other hand, is a much more painful emotion, leaving us feeling empty and distracted. Schadenfreude can actually break the envy cycle and allow us to return to a position of empathy and support, ultimately strengthening our relationships.
