Columbia Heights residents valued their unique backyards that sloped all the way down to warehouses, where children would slide down in winter. Some residents even built gardens atop the warehouses along Furman Street. Previous attempts to create a promenade in the area were unsuccessful as residents preferred maintaining their privacy and backyard views, as seen in writings by Hezekiah Pierpond and Walt Whitman in the 19th century.
