The Morai of the Andes
The ingenious farming techniques of the Andean people allowed them to grow food at high altitudes. The use of terraces and artificial climates created by descending terraces made it possible to cultivate crops like tomatoes, squashes, and pumpkins, even at the highest peaks. The Andean farmers practiced resilience through diversity by cultivating over a thousand varieties of potatoes and over 150 varieties of maize. These crops could be naturally freeze-dried in the cold mountain air, ensuring food storage for prolonged periods. The Andean landscape, once filled with people living in misery, was transformed into blooming terraced fields through the hard work of these ancient ancestors.
