Beyond Genetics: The Misconception of Vitamin D and Calcium Benefits
Vitamin D production varies among individuals due to genetic factors, but this difference does not impact overall health outcomes. Meta-analyses of randomized trials reveal little evidence supporting the effectiveness of vitamin D supplementation for bone health outside of rare deficiencies. Some studies indicate that high doses of vitamin D may even worsen health outcomes, while combined vitamin D and calcium supplementation raises cardiovascular disease risks in older adults. Moreover, there is insufficient evidence that calcium supplements benefit bone health, and substantial evidence suggesting they may be harmful.
