What to Do With Babylon
The question of what to do with Babylon was a constant concern for Assyrian kings. Various approaches were taken, such as allowing a native Babylonian ruler or imposing an Assyrian governor. However, these led to rebellions and declarations of independence. Another option was to keep the throne in the family, but this posed the risk of ambitious brothers using Babylon's power to overthrow the empire. After personal grievances, King Senacharib decided to decisively defeat Babylon. After a 15-month siege, the city fell and Senacharib completely destroyed it, making it unrecognizable. He raised the walls, demolished the temples, and flooded the city. This solved the Babylonian problem for good.
