Internal Family Systems is centered around the idea of the self as a perfect, rational entity overseeing various parts with their own agendas within the mind. The self is not entirely separate from these parts but rather needs to govern and integrate them under its control. This concept emphasizes the need for the self to have benevolent authority over the different aspects of the psyche during therapy.
