This legislation banned all immigration from Asia and restricted European immigration by establishing a quota based on the 1890 census to exclude people from Jewish, Catholic, and other backgrounds. The Act drastically reduced immigration and was a racially motivated attempt to maintain a certain demographic composition in the US.
