World War I heightened fear among US elites regarding immigrant assimilation and national security threat, leading to the 1924 National Origins Act. This legislation banned all immigration from Asia and restricted European immigration by establishing a quota based on the 1890 census to exclude people from Jewish, Catholic, and other backgrounds. The Act drastically reduced immigration and was a racially motivated attempt to maintain a certain demographic composition in the US.
