Mindful Eating and Overcoming Food Addictions

Being mindful while eating allows one to realize the true reward value of food consumption. Mindlessly eating can lead to assigning exaggerated reward value to completing behaviors, such as finishing a bag of chips due to a completion bias. This can turn into a habit where the true reward value is overlooked. By paying attention and being mindful, one can identify the genuine satisfaction derived from food consumption and stop eating at a suitable point. Unlike substance addictions where abstinence is common, overcoming food addictions requires a different approach since complete abstinence from eating is impossible and essential for survival.
