Straight jackets, once used in asylums like Lincoln Asylum in 1829, were found to be dangerous and were banned. Nowadays, in the United States, physical restraints are used as a last resort and include fuzzy wrist and arm restraints. Chemical restraints, like sedatives, are also used if a patient poses a danger. Nonconfrontational techniques, such as removing agitating factors and engaging in open dialogue, are now preferred over traditional restraints like straight jackets and chains.
Straitjackets aren't really a thing anymore unless you're watching a movie or TV show. Or in prison. That's the sad truth.
