The shift from specific diagnoses like Asperger's disorder to a more encompassing term like autism spectrum disorder has caused confusion among individuals and healthcare providers. Many who were previously diagnosed with high functioning autism or Asperger's disorder now fall under the umbrella of autism spectrum disorder. Despite the name change, the essence of the diagnosis remains the same. This shift has both positive and negative implications depending on the individual. While some find it beneficial in understanding their condition, others may feel confused or uncertain. The speaker emphasizes that individuals have the autonomy to identify themselves as they see fit. Additionally, the transition has led to an increased number of evaluations from individuals who were previously diagnosed with Asperger's disorder but do not associate themselves with autism. The speaker acknowledges the knowledgeable audience and plans to continue discussing autism and related topics.
Karen Saporito, Ph.D., explains the ways in which ADHD and autism overlap and how they can present differently in children and adults, and across genders — including why autism is so easily missed and misdiagnosed, especially in girls and women, and the consequences of that.
