Needs act as drivers of behavior, with pleasure and pain serving as indicators of fulfillment or frustration. However, one cannot act directly based on the satisfaction or frustration of needs, but rather on the anticipated reward and punishment. These anticipated outcomes are formulated as purposes, which serve as models of the needs and guide behavior. Survival, for example, is not just a need but a complex purpose that influences other needs. The concept of self arises from constructing a hierarchy of needs to ensure compatibility and resolution of conflicts.
