Effects of THC on Mitochondria and Brain Health

THC impairs mitochondrial function and affects human behaviors and brain health by targeting CB1 receptors on mitochondria. Studies suggest that heavy marijuana use in adolescents is associated with atrophied brain areas with a high density of CB1 receptors, leading to premature aging and memory impairment. Chronic THC use may harm overall mental and metabolic health by damaging brain cell mitochondria, although there is some opportunity for repair and stimulation of mitochondria biogenesis.
