Manumission and Citizenship in Ancient Rome
Manumission, the act of freeing a slave in ancient Rome, was available through formal and informal methods. While both ways guaranteed freedom, only the formal mode also granted citizenship. Without citizenship, a freed slave couldn't pass on property and everything acquired during their lifetime would revert to the master upon their death, leaving their family without inheritance.
