NOTE

Ketogenic Diet and Blood Ketone Levels in Chronic Mental Disorders

Chronic mental disorders, including anxiety, depression, bipolar, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer's disease, are associated with impaired glucose metabolism and insulin signaling system in the brain. For some patients, decreasing glucose and insulin levels by eliminating sweets is recommended, while for others with schizoaffective disorder, schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder, a ketogenic diet with high blood ketone levels is preferred as a brain treatment. Blood ketone levels of at least 0.8 millimole are recommended for depression, while levels greater than 1.5 millimole are preferred for psychotic disorders and bipolar disorder.
