Military defectors and a narrow escape from concentration camps
In an incredible twist of fate, two defectors from the military took poison in 1944 to escape capture and ended up saving their own lives. They became so sick that they missed the last transport to the concentration camps. Imprisoned on Jersey, they discovered their enemies saw them as a threat, but were surprised to receive care and solidarity from German soldiers who had revolted or attempted to desert. Their experience showed the power of writing to engage others in a process of becoming.
