Cumulative Risks Shape Cancer Outcomes
Long-standing environmental exposures contribute cumulatively to cancer risks over time, with smoke inhalation being a notable risk factor for lung cancer. Reducing these exposures lowers risks, while prostate cancer often emerges from gradual accumulative damage to the prostate genome, with more aggressive forms developing in older individuals. Interestingly, only about 5% of those with prostate cancer show symptoms, highlighting the importance of proactive testing for early detection. In contrast, pancreatic cancer exhibits a stark correlation between diagnosis and death due to the absence of an effective early detection test, emphasizing the critical need for advancements in diagnostic capabilities.
