A young and brash individual was walking with friends in Oakland when he was stopped by two police officers for jaywalking at 17th and Broadway intersection. Despite no cars approaching, the individual was reprimanded for crossing the street. This incident reflects the trivial nature of some law enforcement actions.

In 1991, two police officers stopped Tupac Shakur for jaywalking. He said he was knocked unconscious during his arrest, and sued the city of Oakland for 10 million dollars. His lawyer says many of the police brutality cases he's worked on started with jaywalking stops.
