Unlock Better Sleep and Health by Harnessing Your Circadian Rhythm

The Art of Manliness

NOTE

The Influence of Light on Circadian Rhythms

The timing of light exposure plays a crucial role in regulating circadian rhythms. Morning light has the effect of advancing the biological clock, leading individuals to wake up and go to bed earlier, while light exposure during dusk delays the clock, causing later sleep and wake times. Research indicates that individuals with a late chronotype, or 'owls,' often miss out on morning light, which would help adjust their internal clock positively. Instead, they tend to receive light in the late afternoon and evening, exacerbating their tendency to stay up late. A balanced exposure to light during both morning and evening can moderate these effects. Historically, the majority of the population was aligned with natural light cycles due to agricultural lifestyles, creating a natural synchronization with dawn and dusk. Prior to the 20th century, the cost of artificial light was prohibitive, reinforcing reliance on natural light for regulating biological rhythms.
