Repentance and the Atonement in the Book of Alma 7
The insight from the snip is that the traditional view of sin as rebellion and repentance as turning away from rebellion and being forgiven has a dilemma version. This dilemma version of repentance is illustrated in Alma 7 as a grand cosmic act of empathy, where Christ puts himself in our shoes, suffers with us, and then heals us from sin, death, pain, sickness and suffering of every kind. The Atonement is framed as a way for Christ to help us out of the dilemma through healing, rather than through punishment or repaying debts. This broader and global sense of the Atonement fits nicely with the concept of sin as a dilemma in the book of Alma.
