Mecanismo: “social snacking”
Young people often replace in-person interaction with texting and social media. Purely linguistic communication through texting and commenting on posts is not interpreted as being social by the brain due to the absence of voice modulation and body language. This behavior, referred to as social snacking, leads to lightweight digital socialization, increased loneliness, and reduced in-person interaction, as evidenced by the rise in loneliness among teenagers and the decline in daily average time spent with friends since 2012.
