NOTE

Recognizing Stable and Unstable Pain in Running

Runners can distinguish between stable and unstable pain. Stable pain like tendinopathy follows a predictable pattern: a little achy and stiff at the start, improves during the run, and gets stiff again after. This stable pain is generally safe to run through by reducing volume and intensity. However, unstable pain is unpredictable and can worsen during the run. Injuries like bone stress fractures tend to worsen with impact. When running with pain, it should not worsen during the run, pain scale should not exceed three out of ten, pain should not increase post-run significantly, should not persist for days after running, and should not alter your running gait. Any pain leading to gait adjustments indicates excessive load on the body's tissues.
