The Initiation of Ketogenesis: Depletion of OAA and Oversupply of Acetyl Groups

Fat is burned in the presence of a mixed diet through beta oxidation of fatty acids and the presence of oxaloacetate in the TCA cycle./nCarbohydrate restriction leads to depletion of oxaloacetate in the liver, resulting in an oversupply of acetyl groups from fatty acids./nThe combination of an oversupply of acetyl groups and a depleted oxaloacetate pool triggers ketogenesis./nAcetyl groups condense to form ketones such as acetoacetate, beta-hydroxybutyrate, and acetone.
