There's a centrifugal force at work as Washington's ruling class tries to hold onto their advantage, but they constantly find themselves blindsided and unable to control the global system. The 1990s were different, with colonial police bombings being a norm. However, we are now in a trend of de-globalization and old alliances are breaking up and shifting. The United Kingdom is desperately clinging onto its alliance with the US, but it may not be important to the US anymore. Overall, there's a breakdown of collective fantasy in democratic politics.
