NOTE

Understanding Seed Oils: Health Benefits and Comparisons

Swapping soybean or canola oil for sunflower or higher quality oils like extra virgin olive oil can offer health benefits. Soybean oil is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), beneficial for lowering LDL cholesterol, while rapeseed oil is stable due to its higher level of monounsaturated fatty acids. Although rapeseed and canola oils have beneficial properties, sunflower oil may provide additional advantages. While seed oils generally pose no health risks, palm oil is significantly more unfavorable as it negatively impacts blood lipids and LDL cholesterol levels. Research indicates that seed oils are superior to tropical oils like palm and coconut oil. Additionally, a considerable amount of soybean oil consumed in the U.S. is fully hydrogenated, altering its original liquid form into a hard fat for certain food applications, affecting its health implications despite still being labeled as soybean oil.
