The biodiversity quilt, created over millions of years through evolution, faces dramatic rearrangements due to climate change on shorter time scales. While past events like asteroids caused mass extinctions, biodiversity eventually recovered. However, climate change threatens to rip out vital components from the quilt at a faster pace, impacting ecological processes emerging over longer timescales.
