ADHD Diagnosis In Adulthood Explained Everything For Adam Reed

The Hidden 20%

NOTE

Embrace Uniqueness to Overcome Adversity

Using tattoos and unique clothing as a form of armor reflects a resilient approach to self-expression amid bullying and societal norms. Embracing a creative mindset leads to dressing differently, which serves as a powerful form of personal expression rather than a means to conform. The experience of being bullied, particularly for sexual orientation, underscores the conflict between societal expectations and individual identity. The perception of intelligence is shaped by personal experiences, showing that academic systems can mislabel those who think and express themselves differently. Ultimately, the narrative champions the importance of authenticity and the value of expressing one's identity despite external pressures.

I use tattoos and clothes as a bit of an armour. I would say my brain sits way more creative which made me want to dress differently and I love it's not just how I look, it's about the cut of something. It's about the detailing, the colour, the way that it sits on your body. And I was like, that for me was this incredible way to stand out. So I was never scared to be different. I was quite, well, I was extremely badly bullied at school. And a lot of it was around the fact that I was gay, which I didn't know, because again, that wasn't a conversation that was had. And down in Somerset, it was horrific. And it was like, okay, my brain isn't working like other people's. Then I would dress the way I dressed. And I remember people saying, perhaps you shouldn't dress so flamboyantly, and then you wouldn't get bullied and this, that, and you know, and I'm like, but clothes are clothes. Isn't that just a form of expression? So everything that I'm doing in society is considered wrong. That was all going into my brain. You look at school and again, I was bullied quite bad in primary school. So in Somerset, we had three schools. You have primary, secondary and upper school. And I had teachers recommending that my mum take me to a doctor because I was sharing signs of homosexuality. I one night wanted to watch a ballet on TV and the teacher the next day said my dad, they probably wouldn't advise me to watch something like that for obvious reasons. But interestingly, even then, as somebody who struggled being educated with the system that was set up, I was already being labeled as somebody who wasn't as clever as other people. So I very much in my mind determine academia and intelligence totally differently.
