Global Energy Attribute Certificate Registry System
The energy attribute certificate registry system functions primarily as a standardized tracking mechanism for renewable energy production. Each country typically has its own registry or issuing body, except for the US, which has a more fragmented approach. The process begins with the registration of a carbon-free electric facility, akin to applying for a passport. After registration, the facility receives energy attribute certificates on a monthly basis based on the amount of energy produced, measured in megawatt hours, as confirmed by the electric grid operator or another trusted data source. This system ensures that energy producers are recognized for their contributions to the grid and helps facilitate the tracking and accountability of renewable energy generation.
