NOTE

Impact of Blocked vs Interleaved Practice on Learning

In a 2019 study on seventh grade math classrooms, it was found that blocked practice, where students solve similar problems consecutively, led to faster progress and high ratings from students. In contrast, interleaved practice, where students solve mixed problem types, resulted in slower progress and greater frustration among students. However, despite these challenges, the interleaved practice group outperformed the blocked practice group in the test, with the effect size moving the 50th percentile to the 80th percentile. This phenomenon is known as desirable difficulties, where slowing down learning and inducing frustration can lead to more flexible and memorable knowledge in the long term.
