NOTE

Biological Model of REM Sleep and Emotional Processing

REM sleep plays a crucial role in emotional processing during sleep, facilitating emotional depotentiation and detox the next day. This stage of sleep is characterized by a complete shut off of noradrenaline and serotonin, stress-related neurochemicals, while acetylcholine increases. Noradrenaline and serotonin being shut off specifically in the brain allows for emotional memory reactivation and reprocessing while in a neurochemically safe environment, leading to stripping away the emotion from memory.
