Impact of Light Signals on Weight Gain and Diabetes
Living in areas with constant sun exposure may allow individuals to consume high sugar and carbohydrate foods without gaining weight, as long as they maintain outdoor lifestyles. However, limited research shows that prolonged exposure to artificial light indoors, particularly blue artificial light, can contribute to weight gain and diabetes. A study conducted on women living on the equator found that those who spent more time indoors under artificial light were more likely to gain weight and develop diabetes compared to men who maintained traditional outdoor lifestyles. Additionally, a mouse study in 2018 revealed that two groups of mice given the same exercise and calories experienced different weight outcomes, suggesting that weight regulation is not solely determined by calories in versus calories out.
