The Complex Role of Omega Fatty Acids in Metabolism

Keto diets may induce insulin resistance due to negligible carbohydrate consumption, raising concerns about their overall efficacy. Historical dietary patterns included a balance of carbohydrates and saturated fats, contrasting modern diets linked to increased cancer rates and metabolic disorders. A significant barrier to effective glucose utilization involves omega-3 fatty acids, which, despite being touted for their health benefits, could impede glucose oxidation. Omega-3s are prone to oxidation and, if ingested in an unperoxidized state, can yield inflammatory substances when metabolized by enzymes like cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase. Although omega-3s produce less inflammatory mediators compared to omega-6s, prolonged excessive intake of omega-3s correlates with a heightened risk of cancer and neurodegenerative diseases, particularly affecting brain health. Therefore, while omega-3s may mitigate chronic inflammation in the short term, their long-term consumption potentially introduces serious health concerns.
