NOTE

The Beaver Fur Industry in the 19th Century

In the 19th century, beaver fur was highly sought after and expensive due to its waterproof lanolin properties. British milliners alone shipped 20 million beaver headpieces to Europe between 1800-1850. Beaver fur was more valuable than mink or otter fur. The demand for beaver fur extended to couture in Paris, Italy, and Spain, as well as long coats made in China. The use of mercury in shaping beaver hats led to the saying 'mad as a hatter' due to the symptoms of insanity caused by mercury poisoning. The beaver fur industry was a lucrative business during this era.
