Cyanobacteria in the ocean developed a molecular clock to predict the best time for DNA replication in the absence of damaging UV light. This became the first form of predictive regulation and subsequent organisms inherited a similar molecular clock. The first bilateral organisms had a brain with a clock at the core, which eventually gave rise to organisms like insects, crustaceans, snails, fish, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals, all with a similar clock at the front of their brain. In mammals, this clock is known as the super-kiasmatic nucleus, which regulates metabolism and determines the time for energy mobilization and repair activities. The circadian clock has a profound effect on our chemistry, influencing metabolism, energy mobilization, repair processes, memory consolidation, and brain cleaning during sleep.
