Coffee had a profound impact in Europe due to the availability of safe drinking water and its stimulant effects. Europeans previously drank beer all day for safety reasons. Coffee, with its caffeine content, enhanced alertness and productivity, leading to a shift from a state of inebriation to caffeination.
