Mosaic insane growth

In 1993, the NCSA released the mosaic for free download but did not open source the code, allowing anyone to use it. The world wide web, with standard protocols, started to outpace walled gardens like Prodigy and CompuServe, which were pay-to-play closed systems. The internet's open nature led to rapid growth, as shown by the massive interest in the mosaic's first version release in February 1993.
