#313 - AMA #62: Protein’s impact on appetite and weight management, and uric acid's link to disease and how to manage levels

The Peter Attia Drive

NOTE

Obesity Drives Uric Acid Elevation

Higher levels of adiposity are identified as a cause of hyper-eurasemia, indicating that obesity contributes to elevated uric acid levels rather than the other way around. This conclusion is supported by bi-directional Mendelian randomization studies examining specific genes linked to increased fat mass, such as the FTO and MC4R genes. Additionally, certain common medications, including diuretics and low-dose aspirin, can influence uric acid levels. Dietary factors play a critical role as well, highlighting the impact of fructose consumption and foods rich in purines, particularly those with high DNA content like red meat and yeast-rich beer. These dense food sources significantly contribute to rising uric acid levels.
