Cost of Glory

NOTE

The Actions of Rome's Provincial Governors

Lucky elected officials in Rome would go on a duty tour to the provinces, where they can easily earn money to repay their debts. They can start wars, plunder, speculate, extort, or take advantage of their office. However, two influential men in Rome, Pompey and Krasus, didn't need money. Pompey already had wealth from his conquests, while Krasus had a vast empire, including real estate, mining interests, and slave holdings. Instead of seeking financial gain, they decided to wait for better opportunities to outdo each other. This favored Krasus, as Pompey's reputation and power were often stronger in the city when he was away on military campaigns.
