Heart Rate Variability As Biomarker For Health
Heart rate variability indicates the dynamic flexibility of the heart rate, showing health when it varies slightly with breathing. The communication between the two systems, speeding up during inhalation and slowing down during exhalation, is crucial for health. It is a strong predictor of all-cause mortality and correlates with positive factors like conscientiousness, longevity, neurological development, and athletic performance. Using heart rate variability, especially respiratory sinus arrhythmia, helps athletes monitor recovery and readiness for training. However, higher heart rate variability is not always indicative of better health, as other factors can increase variability. This complicates the interpretation but sheds light on certain paradoxes observed in patients and athletes.
