The Rational Reminder Podcast

NOTE

Renting May Surpass Owning in Wealth Accumulation. They are close to equilibrium.

In a comparative analysis of wealth accumulation through renting versus owning across twelve Canadian metropolitan areas, renting surpasses owning in seven regions, despite initial expectations favoring ownership. The cities analyzed include Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Quebec City, Hamilton, Kitchener, Waterloo, Victoria, and Halifax. Ownership remains dominant in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, and Waterloo. Notably, in Edmonton, despite poor price returns, high rents contributed to a favorable outcome for renters. On average, renting results in an ending net worth approximately $15,000 higher than owning, indicating a near equilibrium in housing costs. Winnipeg emerged as the most advantageous city for renters during the analyzed period.
