Effective communication begins with asking deep questions but requires follow-up to ensure genuine understanding. After posing a question, the listener must demonstrate they are actively engaged by paraphrasing the response. This process, known as 'looping for understanding,' involves three steps: first, asking the question; second, restating what was heard in one’s own words to confirm comprehension, while avoiding mere mimicry; and third, validating understanding by asking if the summary is correct. This not only proves attentiveness but also establishes a mutual respect in the conversation. When acknowledgment of listening is achieved, it increases the likelihood of reciprocal listening. Setting a personal goal to repeat back what is said helps you focus on the speaker rather than preparing rebuttals, thereby enhancing presence and connection during discussions.
