Atheism is not uncommon in Muslim societies, with about 5% of people in Saudi Arabia and a similar percentage in the United States and Palestine defining themselves as atheists. While atheism is accepted, the concept of ex-Muslims, which is more politicized, poses challenges due to some alliances between ex-Muslims and those promoting Islamophobia. Despite political implications, socially and within families, being an ex-Muslim is seen as a normal concept.
