NOTE

Effect of Nighttime Light Exposure on Mental Health

Higher nighttime light exposure is associated with increased probability of worse major depressive symptoms, especially in the fourth quartile. Generalized anxiety disorder and bipolar disorder symptoms also worsen with increased nighttime light exposure, with bipolar symptoms being particularly affected at the fourth quartile. For people with bipolar disorder, nighttime light exposure is especially problematic regardless of daytime sunlight exposure. Light exposure at night is independent of factors like sleep duration and exercise. Symptoms of PTSD, self-harm, and probability of psychotic episodes increase with greater nighttime light exposure, indicating a detrimental effect on mental health.
